Tropical Forests are Worth More Standing

We build the financial infrastructure that pays the people protecting the last primary tropical forests.

Less than 1 billion hectares of primary tropical forest remain.
Finite. Scarce. Irreplaceable.

The problem

Destruction is financed.
Protection is not.

This is not a capital shortage. It is a market infrastructure failure. Philanthropy is inconsistent and creates dependency rather than sovereignty. Public funding is slow and favours large institutions. Carbon markets price a single molecule, treat ecosystems as a footnote, and penalise the communities who have protected forests longest.

Annual capital flows · bars not drawn to scale
$100–300B
needed every year to halt tropical deforestation.
$2B
actually reaches forest protection today.
$20M
of that reaches the local stewards who keep the forest standing. 1% of conservation funding.
Protectors need direct access to finance

BioFIA designs the natural asset protocol, payment rails, verification and governance that give Indigenous Peoples and local communities direct access to finance. Capital reaches the ground continuously, on protectors' terms, instead of thinning out through layers of intermediaries.

Who we work with

We are allies to the
biodiversity credit market.

A young market has high-integrity supply and no reliable demand. We work with and for the biodiversity credit market: helping credit developers who do the science properly reach the buyers who will pay for it, and giving those buyers one legible, verified instrument instead of a hundred incomparable ones.

We do not compete with developers. We build the market they have been missing.

Our vision

We envision an economy where nature, and those who protect it, are the foundation of value.

Ecosystems are recognised as living infrastructure: essential to global environmental, economic and geopolitical stability. We build the financial architecture that lets the value of protected nature compound over time, turning conservation from a cost into an asset that appreciates.

This is how nature protection scales beyond philanthropy.
We are creating a path of participation for every person on the planet.

Our mission

Protect the last billion hectares.

Tropical primary forests regulate the climate and hold most of the planet's terrestrial biodiversity. Agriculture, geopolitical stability and economic stability all rest on their survival. What remains is finite and falling by millions of hectares a year.

Our work is measured against six outcomes.

Global deforestation detection

Tropical forest loss detected and delivered first to the protectors who can act on it, as a live alert rather than a statistic published a year later.

Advanced monitoring, community run

Satellite, sensor and field evidence combined into forest health data communities own and operate. Strong enough for a verifier, simple enough for a phone.

Protection that pays

Standing primary forest recognised as an asset, with capital reaching its stewards continuously instead of in grant cycles.

Community enterprise, financed

Nature based businesses owned and run by communities, funded as part of the asset, so protecting the forest builds local wealth.

Democratised conservation

Any person, company or government can become an active participant in protecting the world's last irreplaceable ecosystems.

Oceans and old growth next

The same architecture extends to marine ecosystems and the remaining old growth forests outside the tropics as funding arrives.

Our work · five interconnected systems

We are convening best-in-class experts in each working group

A market for natural assets cannot be built from one discipline. BioFIA convenes five working groups that meet, design, and stress-test together. Each advances a distinct system, and each is accountable to the others.

How we work

We are designing a living system, so we draw on the sciences of living systems.

Markets and forests are both complex adaptive systems. Designing one to serve the other calls for leverage points rather than brute force, and for the knowledge held by the people who have kept these ecosystems alive.

Systems thinking and biomimicry

Leverage points, not brute force. We price the standing condition of a forest and distribute value the way a healthy ecosystem does.

Complexity science

We design for feedback loops, emergence and resilience, producing a system that self-organises as it scales.

Ancestral futures

Indigenous knowledge is not a legacy to preserve. It is a living design principle for the system we are building, and the intelligence layer at its centre.

The protocol

Nature as a planetary central bank.

Everything the working groups design converges on one protocol, built in the open at standingforests.org. Instead of the living world paying for growth, the living world backs the value.

Protection becomes the store of value, and the people holding ecosystems intact govern it.

The reserve

Nature

Living ecosystems are what every economy ultimately runs on. The protocol treats them as the reserve asset, not as an externality priced at zero.

THE NATURE CREDIT BUNDLE

Protection

Each year a forest is verified standing, that protection is issued as a natural asset anyone can hold. Value accrues for keeping it alive.

The governors

Protectors

Indigenous Peoples and local communities set the rules, the standards and the supply. Governance sits with the people whose decisions keep the asset real.

An asset we are building now

The nature credit bundle

A hectare of primary forest produces far more than carbon. Each year a forest is verified standing, its protector issues one stacked credit, and decides what goes into it. Add and remove layers below.

No bundle is issued without this floor. It is what makes the credit legible to an institutional buyer.

Data sovereignty stays with the protector: they choose what is measured, what is sold, and what is never listed at all.

This bundle is one piece of a wider natural asset protocol under development with our allies.

Why brands participate

A brand can point to the forest it keeps standing.

Most environmental claims are abstract: a tonne of something invisible, offset somewhere unnamed. A nature credit bundle is the opposite. It is a named place, a named community, a verified year, and a story a customer can actually follow.

That is what turns environmental spend into brand value.

Something to show

A place,
not a percentage

Every bundle is tied to a specific hectare and the community that protects it. A brand gets a map, a protector and a year. Real impact and greenwashing prevention. This kind of story that survives being told on a package, in a campaign, or to a journalist.

Something that holds up

Claims that survive scrutiny

Protection is measured every year and the payment goes to the protectors directly. There is no intermediary to explain away, which is what makes the claim defensible when regulators, NGOs or customers look closely.

Something that lasts

A relationship, renewed yearly

Because a bundle is issued each year the forest is still standing, a brand's involvement compounds instead of resetting. Long-term partners become part of the record of how that forest was kept alive.
